REACHING OUT TO RURAL NEPAL

Open Your Hands Foundation

WHO CAN CLOSE their heart, or their hands, to a child? The Open Your Hands Foundation provides aid in the form of educational materials and equipment, school renovations and maintenance, and teaching stipends for educators and their assistants in rural Nepali schools. Our work began in 2004 in Birta Deurali, a rugged mountain village in the Kavre District about 90 kilometers east of Kathmandu. Our name, from a quote by the Buddha, honors the 35 percent of Birta Deurali’s residents who are of the Tamang tribe, the largest Buddhist ethnicity in 90 percent Hindu Nepal. The sentiment of our name, and of the quotation it derives from, is equally in the spirit of Hindu tradition, and certainly describes the giving and open nature of all the people of this diverse and special village. Meet them, and see what we have accomplished together.
